Some useful tips of guitar maintenance D.I.Y

  • To Restring
  • Guitar Polishing & Restoration
  • The Neck Set-up
    • The fretboard strings instruments's quality and playability (inclusive of guitars) are subject to it's neck set up condition.
    • Due to humidity & drastical temperature changes, the neck is possible to expand or contract from it's standard size. The expanded neck may cause backward bend neck which cause higher action at the centre of backward curve neck' fretboard. The contracted neck normally developed forward bend neck which commonly produce buzzing sound as the strings positioned at nearly to the highest fret-wire. Both symptoms are undesired outcome for players
    • The Tools required to fix that problem :
    • The L shape wrench that fit into the neck' truss rod size.
      • How to use ? Turn to clock wise to counter backward bending or Turn to counter clock wise to counter forward bending neck.
      • Measurement tools types are below,
      • Line of sight which is commonly used by amateur to check the imaginary stright line between fret 22, 12, 7 and 1st frets
      • a 40 CM ruler which can be put on the fretboard to indicate qualitatively how much bending of the fretboard
      • a fretboard gauge reading device is the most accurate tool, it gives you exact reading on how many 0.XXX inches of bending from straight line. Pro : accurate reading, while you are turning the L key, you can see the gauge reading outcome while the strings are kept in it's pitch, by doing this way there is no need to do approximate neck relief compensation due to strings pull tension effects, these benefits set gauge reading apart from the above 2 methods. Cons : this gauge device maybe costly
    • Due to ageing process, the guitar's fret-wires may develop un-even height one to another, once disallignment start obviously seen by line of sight, the guitar may develop buzzing symptom sound near by those trouble fretwires.
      • Tools that required to fix the problem are a ruler, a fretboard file (either 300 grit or 150 grit) and fretwire polishing
  • The Nut and Saddle setting adjustment
  • The machine heads maintenance
